Societe Brewing Company, Kearny Mesa
When I arrived at 8:40 pm on a Tuesday, there were about 25 people happily enjoying each others’ company and the beer. They had already called last call let me have one pint (not two tasters, which would have been less volume). They also told me they don’t serve flights, just samplers at a max of two per person at a time. I was surprised on two counts: Why close so early if there is so much business? And why the arbitrary rules about serving me a pint instead of two tasters, or about only allowing two tasters at a time?
It was a small off-note in an otherwise perfectly fine experience. The service was pleasant even though she was telling me things I didn’t want to hear. I liked the room and the vibe. People like their beers–Pupil and Apprentice get a lot of attention. On this occasion I had Pugilist (Dry Irish Stout, 4.5% ABV) and I thought it was pretty good, rating it a 3.25/5. It was perhaps a little too sweet, with an edge to the roast I didn’t like, and overall came across as a bit cloying.
There’s plenty of beer in the area so I’ll try to come back and sample more next time I’m up that way.
