Well Water Home Brewing Uses
Wells draw groundwater from underground aquifers and is untreated. Well drillers drill down to the aquifer, which is an underground layer of permeable rock containing water. Then, a pump system is installed to carry the water up from the ground and into your home. It is very easy to find clean, potable water underground that does not need additional treatment to be safe.
The most common issue with groundwater is that it has excess hardness. To combat this, water softeners are used to soften the water. Water softeners are great for home use, but are generally frowned upon when brewing.
Using this type of water for home brewing is usually safe on the hot-side, but should be boiled if ever added to "top off" partial boils.
Well water is often full of minerals and microbes that are common to the local area. It is also common to use a carbon filter in conjunction with well water as it helps remove some larger contaminates before using it in your brewing.
