City and well water are both commonly referred to as hard water due to the concentration of dissolved minerals they have in them. Many homeowners will install a water softener to remove the hardness, which is known to stain sinks and toilets and feel "sticky". However, hard water is actually better for home brewing. Water softeners replace calcium and magnesium minerals with sodium, but those minerals are important to home brewers.
